To overcome a disadvantage relating to the spark ignition of lean-burn gas engines, the authors have studied a pilot-fuel oil-ignition gas engine that uses a small amount of fuel oil corresponding to a few percent of the thermal input. The great advantages of pilot-fuel oil-ignition, lead strong combustion stability, and a good thermal efficiency is achieved. Basic studies have been conducted using single cylinder engine with a 260mm bore. The prototype six-cylinder engine with a 220mm bore, which corresponds to a 1050kW, is served to the performance test. The performance of this prototype engine, Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) of 1.96MPa and brake thermal efficiency of 41.6%, is competent to field-requirement, besides NOx emission level is still remain about one-tenth than that of diesel engine. This paper describes the performance of the pilot-fuel oil-ignition engine and an introduction of the advanced gas engine.
