The inherent flexibility of polyethylene has enabled a wide range of techniques, including thrustrnboring, directional drilling and pipe bursting, to be used to install polyethylene pipe systems.rnMultilayer pipe systems have been developed with the specific objectives of improving thernprotection of the pressure pipe during such installations to maximise the quality of the pipernsystem. This paper discusses the performance of such multilayer pipe technology with emphasisrnon the balance of properties to be expected in service, the tolerance to damage during handlingrnand installation and the quality of electrofusion fitting joints. The authors show that this pipe,rnwith a peelable outer skin, has provided significant economic and environmental benefits inrnwater distribution pipelines and is currently being proven and introduced in Gas distributionrnnetworks.
