The guaranteed integrity of welds in high-pressure gas pipeline is of paramount importancernnecessitating the use of non-destructive examination. Lifetime predictions for pipes are madernbased upon production specifications of material properties and the assumption of no pre-existingrnweld defects. The welds are ultrasonically scanned for defects as part of the production processrnand so the prerequisites for lifetime prediction are fulfilled. However, a case has arisen whererncracks were identified in seam welds during the installation of a pipeline that had previouslyrnpassed production inspection. Subsequent hydrostatic testing of several manufacturing batchesrnfrom the same pipeline revealed welds of low toughness, prone to crack growth. This paper detailsrnan investigation into several methods used for the comparison of two pipeline sections. The aim isrnto determine whether a non-destructive, ultrasonic approach can be taken in order to distinguishrnbetween regions of strong and weak welding and concludes that this will necessitate the use ofrnmuch higher frequencies than is practical in conventional ultrasonic testing.
