Operating gasoline UST facilities pose a significant threat to groundwater resources primarily as a result of the presence of MtBE in gasoline. Recent studies of operating gasoline stations including by Levine-Fricke (Levine-Fricke, 2000) and the Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD, 2000) indicate that Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MtBE) is being released to the subsurface without being detected by existing monitoring systems. Based on the results of these studies, the SCVWD coordinated with the California State Water Resources Control Board and Regional Water Quality Control Board - San Francisco Bay Region to request soil and groundwater investigations at 49 operating gasoline UST facilities, based on their proximity to water supply wells (within 2,000 feet), in Santa Clara County, California. This paper presents the preliminary results from 28 sites that completed the investigations or submitted existing data that indicated a release had occurred.
