The current interest in eliminating tail pipe emissions, reducing greenhouse gases and decreasing the dependency on oil is generating a revolution in thinking towards future vehicles and the fuels that they will use. On the vehicle side, much emphasis has been placed on hybrid vehicles delivering fuel economy and emissions improvements in the near term, and fuel cell vehicles providing a long term solution. However other technologies should not be ruled out such as diesel and advanced gasoline vehicles. For future fuels there seem to be several prospects from low sulfur gasoline and diesel to special custom hydrocarbon fuel and hydrogen. The latter is regularly portrayed as the holy grail of future fuels. In this paper the authors review the trends in vehicle technology and explore how this interacts with the required demand for new fuels. Considerations are given to global and local environmental pressures, cost of vehicles and infrastructure and likely mass market customer demand.
