On-Board Reformer Development for Low Emissions in Spark-Ignition Engines

This paper describes recent progress in our program to develop on-board reformers for enabling low vehicle emis-sions with internal combustion engines. The on-board reformer converts gasoline into reformate, containing hydrogen (H_2) and carbon monoxide (CO). Reformate has very wide combustion limits to enable gasoline-fueled, spark-ignition (SI) engine operation under very dilute conditions (either ultra-lean or with heavy exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) concentrations). In previous publications, we have presented engine emissions and performance results from an SI engine linked to an experimental gasoline reformer. Following a brief review of these engine results, this paper describes recent efforts in the development of a fast start-up gasoline reformer for enabling SULEV.
