We recognise that in this research in progress we are examining organisational change - change driven by the imperatives of the developing knowledge economy. Organisational change implies the modification of core values in an organisation's cultural paradigm (Hales 2001); it implies the development of a learning organisation (Pedler, Burgoyne and Boydell 1994; Senge 1990; Argyris and Schon 1978) and it implies co-operation between organisational functions (Scarborough et al 1999). Where organisations do not address these issues effectively, attempts to release value from human assets by means of Knowledge Management (KM) carry a high probability of failure (Scarborough and Swan 1999). In order to confront the challenges posed by the turbulence characteristic of today's operating environments organisational change seems inexorable. To perform successfully in this new era organisations are looking to their intellectual assets and at ways of leveraging them as a source of sustainable competitive advantage. Due to the low response rate and the resulting size of our sample we recognise that we are unable to generalise from our data. Accordingly, in our paper, we offer an idiographic study of KM practices in UK service organisations.
