The use of engineered ground calcium carbonate (GCC) in precoating of woodfree paper is one way of achievingrnhigher optical performance. However, relative to a standard GCC, lower coating solids must be used. Thernaddition of an appropriate kaolin to a standard GCC can give similar optical performance to engineered GCCrnalone but with benefits of higher runnable solids and a smoother, less absorbent coating layer.
