When natural resources and their services are injured by hazardousrnsubstances or oil, how can affected stakeholders expeditiouslyrnand effectively restore these resources and services? Howrncan the damage assessment and restoration process be streamlined?rnWhat does it take to bring affected interests to the table-rnand keep them at the table-to resolve liabilities and ensurerndevelopment of a common restoration vision?rnThese questions and more were the focus of a workshop on CooperativernNatural Resource Damage Assessment and Restorationrnheld on June 9 and 10, 2004, in San Diego, California. The workshoprnincluded participants from federal and state government, industry,rnAmerican Indian tribes, and environmental groups.rnWorkshop planners included the National Oceanic and AtmosphericrnAdministration, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Associationrnof State and Territorial Solid Waste ManagementrnOfficials, the American Petroleum Institute American ChemistryrnCouncil, the Environmental Law Institute, the Center for PublicrnEnvironmental Oversight, and Scenic Hudson.rnThis paper and presentation presents innovative and creativernideas and solutions discussed at the workshop that may serve tornfacilitate and further promote the cooperative damage assessmentrnprocess.
