On the relations between nature perceptions and sustainable lifestyles in Norway and China

摘要

The increasing resource and environmental pressures have impeded China's efforts to promote their people's life quality, while protecting their natural environment. Achieving a sustainable development between human life styles and the environment requires a strong understanding of the diversity and variety of these dimensions as well as processes for bringing them together. To the human society cultural roots are as important as technological progress and biological diversity.Thus to be truly sustainable communities have to seek development approaches that benefit both the local bioregions and their practice and culture. The first and second section of this contribution investigates different philosophical views on nature in Norway and China. Third, we discuss the influence of nature perceptions on sustainable lifestyles in relation to two bioregional communities and their attempt to integrate a supportive social environment with a low-impact way of life. The fourth section analyses both approaches and looks at new possibilities on how to learn from each other in realizing local sustainable development.We believe that both China and Norway have the knowledge and the technological capabilities to address the material needs to promote a sustainable development. The real challenge is, however, to identify values which enable us to balance societal needs and wishes with the needs for long-term resilience of ecosystems. The role of cultural roots will be very important to define these values and to help guide us to make wise choices.
