Within the past year, the refining and petrochemical industries have increasingly recognized thernGreenhouse Gas (GHG) issue. Regardless of a company's position regarding the merits of thernscience underlying the linkage between global warming and increases in anthropogenic carbonrndioxide emissions, it is impossible for upper management to simply ignore the situation. Thernobjective of this paper is not to discuss whether carbon dioxide is causing global warming. It isrnnot a discussion of methane leaks as a GHG source, nor is it a discussion of technical means torncapture and sequester carbon dioxide. Rather, the intent is to look at the refining industry as arncarbon emitter from a process and chemistry standpoint. How have changes in crude andrnproduct mix altered carbon balances of the refinery and the final products? How about changesrnin product specifications? How can one practically monitor CO_2 emissions? And finally, what canrnone reasonably do to lower CO_2?
