The Méry-sur-Oise drinking water treatment plant (France), operated by Veolia Water on thernbehalf of the Syndicat des Eaux d’Ile de France (SEDIF), has been using a 37 MG/dayrnnanofiltration (NF) membranes plant to produce safe drinking water since 1999. The pretreatmentrnis composed of water storage, acid injection, Actiflo~? weighted flocs lamellarrnsettlement, ozonation, dual layer filtration (anthracite/sand), antiscalant addition andrnmicrofiltration.rnA serious and major problem in nanofiltration process is membrane fouling, resulting in anrnincrease of the normalized pressure drop and normalized flux reduction which causernsignificant increase of operational costs and cleaning chemicals consumption increasing therndrinking water production costs. Fouling is only diagnosed on the basis of parameters such asrnpressure drop, flux decrease, salt rejection decrease and destructive membrane autopsies.rnEvidently, there is a need for advanced tools allowing prediction and control of membranernfouling and optimization of chemical cleaning at real time without any interruption of thernoperation and for a minimal cost.rnThe objective of this study was to develop and validate a new tool for on-line foulingrnprediction and control which must be representative of spiral wound membrane elements usedrnin practice.rnFor our study, three identical pilot units containing each 8 parallel 2.5-inch spiral wound NFrnelement are connected on each of the three stages of a NF train respectively. Consequently,rnthe pilot units and the train were fed with the same water quality and operated with similarrnhydraulic conditions. Chemical cleanings were conducted simultaneously on the train and thernpilot units periodically every 1000 hours. Pressure transmitters were used for pressure droprnmonitoring of the three stages of the NF train and differential pressure transmitters were usedrnfor the individual membrane elements on each pilot unit.rnAfter 215 days of operation, the resulting fouling was extensively characterized by completernmembrane autopsies before and after chemical cleaning.rnThis new tool allows the substitution of the 8 inch-elements autopsies by 2.5-inch elementsrnautopsies and the optimisation of the cleaning efficiency. It does not need to interrupt thernplant operation. Moreover, this tool can be used as a monitoring tool for early warning,rncharacterization of the fouling potential of the feed water, comparison of different pretreatmentrnschemes and for evaluation of fouling control applying different chemicals.
