The Long Beach Water Department (LBWD) has been performing extensive research into addressing the issue of the corrosiveness of desalinated seawater on distribution systems. Three approaches are available to predict corrosion impacts: corrosion indices, bench-scale tests, and pipe-loop testing. Corrosion indices are calculated based on water quality information and are easy to use; however, the results may not be entirely accurate. Bench-scale testing may be more accurate, but more time-consuming than using corrosion indices. Pipe-loop testing may be the best simulator of actual distribution system behavior, but it may be the most costly approach and therefore not feasible for many utilities.rnAll three approaches were tested at LBWD and correlation analysis performed. Results from the pipe-loop testing showed that adding 40 mg/L alkalinity and adjusting pH to 8 mitigated the corrosive effects. The blended water (50% of desalinated water + 50% distribution system water) results did not show an increase in the corrosion of iron, cement lined and copper pipes. The results were consistent with the prediction from corrosion indices (Langelier Saturation Index-LSI and Wollasonite Saturation Index-WSI) and bench scale tests. The pipe-loop testing also showed higher lead from leaded home plumbing components, which was consistent with corrosion indices (chloride-to-sulfate-mass-ratio-CSMR) prediction and bench scale tests. Overall, results from pipe-loop testing correlated well with prediction from corrosion indices and bench testing, verifying the value of indices and bench-testing in predicting corrosion.
