Since Joseph M.Juran presented the first process capability index (PCI) in 1974,the use of them to assess process acceptability has become popular and widespread.Among the PCIs,Cpk is by far the most popular one in use and is the only one reported in many companies.Unfortunately,the range of k in Cpk is controversial.By applying various control charts to detect changes of various magnitudes,this paper provides a statistically based reason for the range of k.
