In this paper, a retrieval scheduling problem is considered for an end-of-aisle order-picking system equipped with multi-shuttle storage/retrieval machines. In the system, pallets retrieved by the machine are picked at workstations to fulfill individual orders and then be restored back into the rack. An integer programming model is developed for the problem. Based on the characteristic of the problem, a scheduling heuristic is designed and applied. The performance of different scheduling methods and the impact of system parameters on the computational efficiency are analyzed through numerical experiment. Compared with the First Come First Serve policy, the designed heuristic can achieve an improvement on the total travel time of the storage/retrieval machine. At the same time, the computational time can be substantially reduced compared with that of the adopted optimization solver.
