The paradigm of Device-to-Device (D2) communication has recently emerged as a potential LTE-Advanced cellular network technology to cope with the spectrum crunch issue in future ultra-dense heterogeneous networks. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for D2D resource channel allocation that minimizes interference among D2D, cellular and small cells while maximizing overall network capacity. Resource allocation is a mixed integer non-linear program (i.e., an NP-hard problem). The authors developed a Sequential Max Search (SMS) algorithm that is less computationally demanding approach for D2D resource allocation. Results demonstrate that SMS achieved a significant space search reduction than that of brute-force algorithm, but SMS had sub-optimal solution.
