In an effort to expose more of the public to electric vehicles, and the opportunity for thernpublic to lease electric vehicles, the City of Vacaville (population of 90,000) in NorthernrnCalifornia secured a $300,000 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) ImprovementrnProgram grant to provide an additional $6,000 incentive over the life of a three-year lease of arnqualifying electric vehicle.rnThe overall goal of the City's Electric Vehicle Incentive Program was "to have the mostrnnumber of electric vehicles per capita (on the residential side) than any other city in thernnation."rnWithout advertising, other than the positive press coverage of the program throughout SolanornCounty, the list of interested individuals grew to more than 100 names. Many of the familiesrnhave taken delivery of the General Motors EV1 (73) or Ford Ranger EV (4), and sevenrnbusinesses in town took delivery of the Chevy S-10 Electric Pickup Truck for a total of 84rnelectric vehicles delivered through the City's Electric Vehicle Incentive Program.rnBy providing the additional $6,000 incentive for the first lease of an electric vehicle for thernresident, it is the feelings of the Transportation Systems Manager, that the resident will trulyrncome to realize the benefits of leasing an electric vehicle (including the low operating andrnmaintenance costs) and be willing to continue leasing an electric vehicle at the normal leasernrate following the termination of the initial lease. This will ultimately help promote electricrnvehicles, by providing additional exposure to the public, and help improve the air quality inrnthe greater Vacaville area.
