After extensive application in portable products, lithium ion batteries have not only been proven to havernexcellent characteristics in wide temperature range, but have also shown satisfactory safety performancernin worldwide daily life. The excellent performance and cycle life have attracted much attention from therndevelopment engineers of mobile products, especially including light-weighted electric scooters andrnelectric bikes. In the case of the light vehicles, weight and cycling performance of batteries are criticalrnissues to satisfy the requirements for the total performance of next generation products. To fulfill therndifferent voltage rating of various products and the management requirements of Li-ion batteries, it isrnvaluable for battery supplier to design one or two standard modules with basic protection and monitoringrncircuits. With one or more standard modules, developer can pack a battery system in a minimal timernperiod for evaluation of application in products. In case of more than evaluation, the modular batteriesrnwith monitoring circuits and optional switches and current shunt will help people to construct a smartrnbattery management system.rnIn this paper, we will show the developing modulized battery and management system. Based on thernconcept mentioned above, two versions of circuit system for different module are being developed. Therncharacterization of a first module for HEV application will be presented and discussed. A second modulernwith modified pack architecture and circuit distribution to have better flexibility for wide application willrnalso be proposed and discussed. More details will include the design consideration and comparison of therndistributed circuits for cell monitoring and balancing.
