Users of Electric Vehicles (EVs) encounter a unique level of anxiety, which is related to the uncertaintyrnof possibly not having enough battery charge available to make a complete round trip with an EV. Evenrnwith a full charge at the onset of the proposed trip, this high anxiety level still exists, and creates arnreluctance to use this environmentally friendly transportation technology. To reduce this stress level,rnSouthern California Edison Company (SCE) hasrndeveloped computer-based applications called thernElectric Vehicle TripPlanner~© and EV Router~©, which arernGIS-based to incorporate topographical elevations. Thisrnpaper will provide details on how these applications arernused by SCE's fleet operators to plan various routesrnneeded to accomplish desired tasks using EVs in thernplace of Internal Combustion Engine-powered vehicles.rn(Figure 1 is a fleet EV that uses the EV Router) Inrnaddition, these computer-based applications have beenrnexpanded with the ability to analyze Electric Bus routesrnin conjunction with transit operators, to determine thernduty cycles needed by Electric Buses to complete specificrnroute demands.rnThis paper will examine how the use of these computerbasedrnapplications will maximize the usefulness of Zero-Emission Vehicles and extend the number ofrnelectric miles traveled, resulting in increased anxiety-free use of Electric Vehicles and Electric Buses.
