Testing distributed systems can be difficult due to the lack of available source code, the heterogeneity of language, variation in architectures, and the capabilities of a monitoring mechanism. This paper introduces a representation of component behavior in a distributed system. The behavior is described by modeling the relationships between messages sent and received by the component. The representation of component behavior is capable of describing behavior at any stage of development and is capable of comparing descriptions to analyze inconsistencies between design, simulations, and executions. We include a method for combining sequence diagrams to create a single behavioral diagram for describing component behavior.
