While this work does not provide comprehensive solutions for all stress components within tubular bonded joints subjected to the changes in temperature, it does provide the values for the radial normal stresses (peel) which may play a significant role in joint failure. Analyses have been presented for the plane stress, plane strain, and generalized plane strain solutions. The generalized plane strain case is believed to be most applicable to tubular joints with reasonably long overlap lengths. The residual stresses for typical materials are seen to be significant. Good design practice should dictate that the use of dissimilar adherends for tubular joints is especially detrimental. The confining nature of the tubular joints can result in relatively high peel stresses throughout the adhesive layer when the joint is subjected to temperature variations. Such designs should be avoided. Finite element analyses of these joints are currently underway to check the validity of these closed-form solutions, and evaluate the shear stresses that are also present within these bonded joints.
