A battery of preliminary examinations was conducted to evaluate various environmental swabbing techniques, the enumeration capacity of selectively culturing media, and the effects of enrichment in bacterial isolates. This was consequently the foundation of a number of sampling protocols devised to determine the emissions from household residual wastes and the possible biological hazards posed to householders and to the collectors of household wastes operating for local councils' in England.rnA model vessel, representative of a typical household residual wastes bin, was designed and modified to permit the extraction of air from the inside 'dead-space' of the wheelie bin, and to collect leachates generated by the decomposition of organic components. The waste bins were filled and emptied on a weekly and bi weekly basis. Samples were isolated from the internal air of each bin and swabs taken from their internal surfaces weekly for a period of 13 weeks over summer and autumn 2006 and compared against a control.rnBacterial organisms identified include: Salmonella spp., Proteus spp., Clostridium spp., Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Listeria spp., Legionella spp., Yersinia spp. and Campylobacter spp..
