High pressure torsion is a well-controlled deformation mode which allows studies of structural refinement over large strain ranges, beyond those obtainable by conventional processing. In the present study dislocation structures in Ni deformed by high pressure torsion at a pressure of 4 GPa to von Mises strains ranging from 0.53 to 5.2 have been investigated by TEM. Yield stresses have been estimated from hardness measurements. The findings are compared with results from rolled Ni. The two deformation modes show a similar evolution of both structure and yield stress.
