摘要

In the fall of 2006, WVU's recycling program was executed with contracted services. No recycling was done at athletic events, i.e. football (attendance ~ 60,000) and basketball games. Through collaborative efforts between WVU, the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection (WV DEP) and the Monongalia County Solid Waste Authority (MoncoSWA), Mountaineers_® Recycle was born. Using volunteers, bags are distributed to tailgaters, into which they are asked to place their plastic bottles and cans, tie shut and leave at their tailgating site. Bags are collected post game. This joint effort resulted in the collection of 172,000+ bottles and cans, or roughly 9.2 tons of material recycled. This effort saved 66+ trees, 97,800+ kwh saved or enough to power 9.14 households for a year, 3,900+ gallons of gasoline saved, and 34+ metric tons of CO_2 equivalent reduction. A total of $2,100 was raised for WVU Children's Hospital.
