Deposition of steam evaporates on the nozzles of the IP turbines at Wairakei has become more pronounced since the shift in production to "dry" steam wells and operation with superheat conditions within wellbores and pipelines. This deposition, and the outages needed to remove it, resulted in significant production losses. A simple turbine washing system was designed and installed to dissolve deposits with the turbine on load. The washing procedure is done for short periods on an as-needed basis. It has been cost effective and there is no indication that the additional water has been detrimental to the life of the turbine.
