The detrimental effects of some meteorologicalrnphenomenon such as wind shear, thunderstorm,rnice/snow etc, to aviation safety are relativelyrnwell known. But aerodynamic influences due tornheavy rain are still an on-going researchrnsubject, and needs further investigation. In thernpast decade there are neither experimental norrnnumerical researches on heavy rainrnaerodynamics except our numerical simulationrnconducted at 2003. This paper first review somernresearch finding of heavy rain effects onrnaerodynamic performance degradation. Tornfurther investigate the rain physics, CFDrnmethod and preprocessing grid generator arernused as our main analytical tools, and thernsimulation of rain is accomplished via twophasernflow approach's Discrete Phase Modelrn(DPM). The current discoveries of a typicalrncommercial airfoil show that this researchrnsuccessfully simulates the low speedrnaerodynamic efficiency degradation under thernheavy rain. The degradation rate increases withrnthe rain rate, and the premature stallrnphenomenon is also reported. It is expected thatrnthe quantitative information gained in thisrnpaper will be useful to the operational airlinernindustry, and greater effort such as flight testrnshould put in this direction to further improvernaviation safety.
