Under the compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases must be reported in a transparent and verifiable manner. An important part of these emissions are due to biomass burning. The main uncertainty factor for the estimation of burned biomass and atmospheric emissions is the vegetation surface affected by fire. In this work we applied a burned area detection methodology to the NASA-Pathfinder AVHRR Landcover 8 km data set for 1990, which is the reference year for the Kyoto Protocol. The global burned area map was evaluated using data sets from different parts of the globe showing promising results. The existence of 15 years of pre-processed images (1981-1994) makes it interesting for the analysis of biomass burning patterns and changes. It can be used to estimate emissions produced by biomass burning, as well as to analyse fire events in relation to climatic events such as El Nino Southern Oscillation.
