The market of fixed satellite services for consumers continues to expand in the domains of TV broadcasting and broadband Internet access, stimulated by the adoption of HDTV and the deployment of Ka-band multi-beam satellite systems. In this context, the consumer terminal technologies have evolved over the years to provide higher throughputs and offer more compact solutions for both in-door and out-door units (e.g., compact antennas, integrated transceivers, and low consumption hardware). Extrapolating to future services, it is expected that the next generation of consumer satellite terminals integrate more functions in a more compact housing, while taking advantage of terrestrial technologies (ADSL triple-play modems, home media storage & distribution systems, etc). The paper envisages several architectures for next generation terminals. One scenario is to consider the integration of digital functions in the ODU so that the terminal resides out-door as an access point, and interfaces with the home network at the IP level. While this scenario raises technical and environmental challenges, gains are expected in terms of costs reduction, modularity and readiness for high throughput connectivity. Synergies are also foreseen between receive-only and full receive & transmit terminal technologies, which could also be applicable to professional applications such as SCADA.
