This work carries out a study of the static and dynamic behaviour of a three lobe offset journal gas bearing. The influence of the internal geometry on both load carrying capacity and stability behaviour is investigated. The load carrying capacity is characterised from the minimum film thickness within the bearing when submitted to an imposed load (magnitude and direction are fixed). A numerical non linear dynamic model is presented. The specific approach developed allows to point out and quantify the inner geometry influence on both stability limit and minimum film thickness in the bearing. The typical result is that a bearing able to support a high load will not necessary fit a given application because of its low level of stability. Using this original approach, it is possible to design a profile with optimised static and dynamic behaviour in connection with a specific application.
