Preventive and curative measures are taken in the form of excluders, ejectors and desilting chambers to reduce adverse impact of silt on hydro-mechanical equipments of run-of-river hydro Projects. The settling basins or tanks of larger size have been found effective in settling fine sediments in case of high head projects. The removal of the settled sediment is a problem in such situations. Dredging is one of the several means of desilting a settling tank / reservoir without interrupting the operation of reservoir. It has economic and environmental problems. Because of these problems it is rarely used for desilting a reservoir. However, it has been adopted in case of balancing reservoir of Beas-Sutlej Link (BSL) Project. This paper describes the situations in which dredging of balancing reservoir has been adopted. The problems created due to dredging and the possible alternative technical solutions to deal with these are also described.
