In general, measurements about deviations relevant to corresponding flanks of teeth are carried out with a stylus being in contact with the tooth flank. However, it is hard to apply such technique to the gear the module of which is smaller than 0.2, because the stylus that can be available must be extremely fine. Although measuring microscopes are available to the case, the process is inefficient. This study aims to measure the profile error of minute module gears the module of which is smaller than 0.2 utilizing an optical method. The measuring method here introduced is the optical cutting method that is one of effective technique for the shape recognition. The optical cutting image that appears on the tooth flank is detected from 2 different directions simultaneously, that is expected to provide more accurate information about the gear shape. The two images are integrated in the computer and the contour of the gear is extracted by image processing. Finally the profile errors are obtained comparing the contour with the design profile. In this report, the way of measurements and results of measurements for gears the module of which is 0.2 are introduced.
