For the sake of the high workability, self-compacting concrete is generally prepared by the high content of cement and mineral admixture or fillers, the limited coarse aggregate volume and use of large amount of chemical admixture and etc. In this paper, the mechanism of "self-compacting" of fresh concrete was discussed and then an aggregate-space model for self-compacting concrete was proposed, aimed at further establishing the relationship between composition, microstructure and properties of self-compacting concrete(SCC) and developing a new mixing design method for SCC. Meanwhile, a parameter of aggregate-space coefficient was used to characterize this model. And the relationship between volume of aggregate and aggregate-space coefficient was established. Experiments were carried out to verify this model.
