Functionalistic artificial intelligence tried to construct a mind without body, suppressing all interations with the environment considered as a source of disturbance. But this approach has proved to be unable to go much beyond the symbolic and formal domains. This strongly suggests that only by coupling the artificial mind to the environment through a body equipped with sense organs a flexible and versatile mind can be obtained in which the systemic and diachronic character of intelligence is reflected. This has brought about a renewed interest for the body and a parallel reevaluation of history, contingency and story-telling activity. By telling stories, each peson continuously tries to find a sense of his being embedded in a communicational context, both historical and pereceptive, in which memory and sense organs act as filters.
