Nanotechnology is one of the scientific and technological fields with the largest potential business opportunities today. Vast amounts of resources are being allocated to the development of nanotechnology by public and private sectors alike. SWNTs (Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes) in particular, offer one of the greatest commercialization potentials in the field due to the vast array of possible applications. However, notwithstanding the range of possible applications of the technology, the fabrication methods, obstacles, and problems to achieve mass production levels of high quality SWNTs are of paramount complexity. SWNT fabrication technology is still in the developmental phase. There are different competing SWNT production approaches, methods and languages employed. This study presents a description of the technical and business environment via a State of the Art Matrix (SAM) analysis as a mean to analyze the level of maturity of the scientific field. This potentially can provide business investors and engineering managers a better understanding of the risks and timeframes involved in SWNT investment projects.
