The US is losing its leadership role in scientific discovery and innovation. The decline of the US share of intellectual property (IP) is one indication of loss of global competitiveness. Because innovative ideas tend to be developed by younger engineers and scientists, an area which deserves attention is the importance of educating undergraduate engineers in IP.rnThis paper presents the results of a survey of patent lawyers from different parts of the US to gather their opinions on the importance of IP education for undergraduate engineers. The patent lawyers surveyed were a select group of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who have a great deal of experience in patent law. All were undergraduate engineers and scientists. Their conclusion was that undergraduate engineering students should have exposure to intellectual property by virtue of an intellectual property course offered as part of the engineering curriculum.rnThe conclusion that IP is important and should be taught to undergraduate engineers verifies the results from a previous survey of a sample of engineering school Deans in the Mid-Atlantic region. However, a previous nation-wide survey of the top 10 schools of engineering (as rated by U.S. News) found that there were no mandatory or core IP courses in their undergraduate engineering curriculum.rnFuture research should explore other educational modes such as labs and Web based courses to educate undergraduate engineers in IP rather than in a core or mandatory course(s).
