The intended use of this means of obtaining refrac-tivity information is to provide near-real-time indication of ducting conditions on an azimuth-by-azimuth or sector-by-sector basis onboard Navy ships, using the ship's primary air search radar as the data source. Presently, information pertaining to surface based ducts is obtained by radiosondes, rocket-sondes or from numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. Each of these methods has its drawbacks. In situ sampling usually results in time-late and range independent estimates of refractive conditions. NWP models are improving rapidly but scale and coherency issues remain. On the other hand, the quality of the propagation loss coverage diagrams generated using the radar-inferred environmental parameters may be quite usable.
