For on-board processors, digital filters are employed to perform various Digital Signal Processing (DSP) tasks especially during the channelisation process for demultiplexing the incoming channels as well as multiplexing for their re-transmission back to the ground. In this paper we will focus on the Half-Band (HB) filters, which are the choice on various filter bank approaches. Implementing a HB filter, the conventional choice is a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter due to its simple mathematical form and its ability to have a linear phase response which does not cause any phase distortion during its processing. However, in some cases (where some distortion in the phase is tolerated) Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters would also be a good choice to implement a HB filter due to lower complexity in its structure in comparison to an FIR filter. Our studies have shown that it is possible to obtain reductions of up to 35% both in terms of circuit area and power when FIR HB filters are replaced with their IIR counterparts with only a small distortion in the phase response in return without any compromise in the overall performance. In this paper we will talk about three alternatives for implementing a HB IIR filter, which are 1) Balanced Model Truncated (BMT) derived IIR 2) HB IIR using Lowpass-to-Lowpass Frequency Transformation (LLFT) and 3) HB almost-linear phase IIR. A comparative study on the estimated complexity and power dissipation of each approach will also be presented.
