The purpose of this paper is to develop a systemic perspective of tensions in complex systems. Tensions are suggested as a source of potential discord in complex systems. Three main themes are explored in complex system tensions. First, the notion of tensions along three axes of complex systems is explored. These axes include design, control, and change. Following the development of axes of tension, a second theme suggests that the inappropriate balance in these tensions creates a source of discord in the system configuration. This discord manifests itself as problematic behavior or performance in the complex system. Without resolution of the tension imbalance, a system may maintain viability (ability to maintain a separate existence), however, that existence might fall short of expectations. The third and final theme for balancing tensions introduces a set of system principles that can elevate the level of thinking and practice to better deal with tensions in complex systems. The tensions exist, irrespective as to whether or not they are acknowledged. Understanding the potential sources of these tensions, and possible strategies to more effectively address inconsistencies, offers practitioners the opportunity to more effectively address tension disparities. The paper concludes with the suggestion of implications for practitioners who must deal with managing complex systems.
