Managing high octane groups of engineers and scientists in various phases of a research project is described based upon the collective experiences of the authors in small company settings. Among the phases to be described are proposal writing, requirements gathering, specification capture, scheduling, project execution, reporting, project delivery, project documentation, organizational growth and capturing of institutional memory. Team dynamics involving team formation and structure, project roles, decision-making, and accountability are described as they pertain to these project phases. Pragmatic lessons include defining the project leadership structure based upon managerial skills and not necessarily by the PI on the project proposal or based on technical expertise when possible, and developing those skills in engineers and scientists when they are in short supply in the small company setting. Identifying uncertainty and managing risk are described in the context of project scheduling.
