The worldwide explosion in the use of microelectronics and the peneration of electronics products into all walks of daily life has made the electronics revolution a widely acceptd phenomenon. So pervasive is the electronics revolution and its continuing promise of instant access to information and better living through electronics, that only belated consideration is being given to its actual impact on our lives, our health, and our environment. Electronics seems relatively innocuous, ignoring, of course, the sociological and psychological impact which will be evident in generations to come. Innocent acceptance by the populace of this easier way of life leads to complacency and unconcern about the impact of electronics on human health and the world's natural environment. Fortunately there are parts of the electronics industry which has adopted a responsible approach in addressing health and environmental issues associated with the manufacture, use and lifetime ownership of electronics products. They have created many scientific and technological solutions to the acute problems in the manufacturing segment of the industry. It has to be said, that some socially and environmentally conscious government initiatives in Europe, the USA and in Japan have aided the move to such responsibility, to such an extent that companies are addressing the economic and natural benefits that derive from environmentally conscious electronics. Key areas being addressed include replacement of lead-free solders, replacement of ozone-depleting cleaning agents, miniaturisation (reducing amount of hazardous materials used or requiring disposal), energy minimisation (both in manufacturing and in product use).
