Promoting Manual Handling Innovations in Road Maintenance Work

It is widely accepted that manual handling hazards in a workplace are generally dealt with most effectively by programs that promote re-design of work procedures and equipment. Consultation is a vital element within such programs to ensure that changes address the real needs and will be accepted by employees. The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has implemented programs to promote re-design of tasks that have manual handling risks. The current program involves work groups receiving training in managing manual handling risks. Each team then follows a risk management process, with support from line management and OHS staff, to address their manual handling hazards. This approach has resulted in many documented improvements being made to work equipment and procedures. A collection of solutions to manual handling problems has been established on the RTA's computer intranet to support the program by sharing good ideas between locations across NSW. Currently there are about 90 case studies in the collection. Examples will be shown during the presentation of this paper.
