The development of inspection methods using structure-guided waves requires careful study of the properties of the wave modes which can exist in the structure. The simplest modes, such as the Rayleigh mode on a free surface or the Lamb modes in an unloaded isotropic plate, are well known. However, the modes in many more complicated structures, such as multilayered plates or embedded bars, are often not available in the literature and are not easily calculated. This paper summarises and illustrates the capabilities of a general purpose modelling tool, "Disperse", which has been developed by the authors in order to predict and study guided waves in arbitrarily multilayered structures of flat or cylindrical form. Disperse has been used extensively by the authors for the development of advanced guided wave techniques for the inspection of structures.
