At the 26th Annual Conference of Metallurgists in Winnipeg 1987 we presented for the very first time an R&D project aiming at the development of a remote-sensing technology for on-line process monitoring at Peirce-Smith copper converters. Today, 15 years later, the technology is beginning to gain worldwide recognition as a versatile tool for continuous production control of various smelt-metallurgical processes. The presentation will exemplify applications of the technology, today known as the Semtech OPC System, and illustrate technical and educational aspects of implementing high-tech into well-established industrial operations.
