This paper reviews options for treating gases from laterite smelting, describes the off-gas system selected for Cerro Matoso S.A.'s second furnace line and discusses details of the afterburner design and its performance as part of the overall system. Off-gas systems for electric furnace smelting of laterites must satisfy several criteria. The furnace freeboard must be controlled in the correct range of temperature and pressure, the fine dust emitted from the furnace must be collected and the system must safely handle variable concentrations of carbon monoxide, which are frequently above the explosive limit. Hatch and CMSA designed an off-gas system to handle these difficult conditions. The key to the system is the front-end afterburner design. The afterburner is water-cooled and has forced staged air addition, helping to prevent buildup, control heat fluxes and ensure safe and effective carbon monoxide combustion. The system is currently being commissioned and is performing well.
