In recent years much has been written about companies that are becoming more pro-active in their approach to ergonomics. For many manufacturing companies, this may start when tooling and equipment are put in place on the plant floor or when work standards are developed. Such an approach is pro-active for organizations that have previously only reacted to employee complaints or injuries with ergonomics solutions or improvements to the job. Yet at best, this definition of pro-active ergonomics is still a break-even or loss minimization strategy. The rason is that major design decisions have already been made, capital has been invested and program timing is moving along the critical path. Ergonomics interventions at this point in the process are still expensive, "Band-Aid" type fixes. As a result, many companies still struggle with justifying a business case for ergonomics.
