Planning for the facility of today must consider past, present, and future uses. These general considerations are compounded by serious environmental implications which can include factors never before considered as a part of facilities planning. Many of these factors relate directly to the structure design such as stormwater drainage control, hazardous materials containment and storage, and neighborhood impact statements. Other factors seem only remotely involved with facility planning yet have a direct bearing on present and future liability. Some of these factors include prior use assessments, verifiable employee training, emergency contingency planning, and others. Each of these areas should be a concern to the facilities planner since the current environmental codes make the omission of these factors severely punishable by law.
