This paper describes the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) trialrnsystem in Taiwan, includes the design of ETC backend systems and howrnthese systems work with other ETC components such as Road Side Unitsrn(RSU), On-Board Units (OBU), Contactless IC cards and Add ValuernMachines (AVM). Also, we will introduce a variety of functions of thernbackend systems such as billing audit, vehicle violation processing,rncustomer services, system operation and maintenance supporting, ICrncard management, traffic management and decision supporting that helprnthe operation of the ETC system effectively. Finally, the results andrnthe lessons we have learned from the ETC trial project are reported.
