A novel dry slag granulation (DSG) process based on a spinning disc is being developed by CSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship.This process utilises the centrifugal force to break up molten slag into droplets,which are quenched and solidified with air to produce glassy products for cement manufacture and at the same time to recover the sensible heat of slag.The integrated DSG and heat recovery process has been successfully demonstrated at a pilot plant scale with throughputs up to 5 t/h.CFD modelling tool has been used to simulate the DSG process steps including slag atomisation at the spinning disc,slag droplet collision with walls,air delivery and interactions with slag droplets/granules as well as droplet quenching and heat exchange in a complex and dynamic process.CFD modelling has played a key role in process design,optimisation and scale up.The present paper provide a brief overview of CFD modelling carried out on slag atomisation by a spinning disc,involving two multiphase CFD models: a steady-state and two-dimensional model for molten slag spreading on the disc to predict slag film thickness and a transient three-dimensional model for the breakup of the slag film and droplet formation.
