In the last few decades we assisted to a significant increase of interest for the chestnut culture in many agroforestry systems. The market potential appears prosperous and this situation gives new impulses for the valorisation of this rural resource. According to this positive trend, high forests have been restored and new orchards planted. Nevertheless in many areas the technological development is weak, pests and diseases threaten the culture and the quality of nut and timber is poor. The study deals with opportunities and problems of the chestnut industry and presents actions and strategies to allow the culture to improve its fundamental role of multipurpose species.
