Revival of chestnut culture in Mediterranean countries: factors to improve the quality of productions.

In the last quarter of the 20th century in Europe, a progressive reevaluation of the natural resources based on the principles of sustainability with increasing emphasis on traditional productions and natural landscapes has taken place. In many agroforestry systems, the chestnut is one of these resources and its reevaluation passes through an appropriate recovery and management of chestnut plantations and forests to obtain quality products to create revenue and employment along the production chain. However, the differentiation from "standardized" foodstuffs may occur only if nutritional, sensorial, wholesome values and the genotype/environment relations are emphasized. The distinction was made through marketing means, such as a label certification enabling the growers to evidence the nut peculiarities, respecting the quality standards. As for fruits, to compete with big commercial groups, small firms must distinguish their timber by eco-certification to grant that service, production and commercialization correspond to environmentally friendly activities. The future of the chestnut industry involves the development of an integrated production system based on sound science for an increasing demand of commodities..
